“If A Tree Falls” Still Gets Our Vote

Although “If A Tree Falls” didn’t win the Oscar, our viewing followed by Q&A with co-producer Sam Cullen convinced us that this film which tells the story of what environmental activists from the Earth Liberation Front went through in their campaign against corporate powers should have been the right choice in this “Occupy” era.

Although the activists did engage in destruction of private property, the larger question when corporations environmental policies are so destructive to humans as well as animal and plant life, what’s the bigger crime and where is justice?

We urge all to see the film and see for yourself.

Come view Oscar-nominated film “If A Tree Falls”

We’re screening “If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front” which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary film, on Saturday, Feb. 25th @ 7 pm, followed by a discussion and Q&A.  Although the film tells a compelling story about environmental activism and the level it was taken to, there are powerful implications for the current work of all social justice movements with  lessons to be gained and pitfalls to be avoided.

In the New York Times, If a Tree Falls, Maybe it Can Win an Oscar, Jan. 24, 2012,
producer Marshall Curry states that:

“It’s been amazing to me how much overlap there is between the unfolding story of the OWS movement and the story of the environmental movement in the 90s. This summer, when the film was first released, it was a historical film, but suddenly the issues it deals with are urgent and on the front pages of newspapers every day. We’ve had lots of activist groups and universities do screenings because people are asking, what kinds of activism are effective? What kinds are ethical? And what are the legal ramifications?

The film touches on many legal issues, including the application of a “terrorism enhancement” in prison sentencing for acts of arson by radical environmental activists.

Capt. Ray Lewis Speaks Out

Capt. Ray LewisOn Thursday we had the privilege and honor to host retired Capt. Ray Lewis, formerly of the Philadelphia Police Department. Capt. Lewis shared how he was living on his farm in upstate New York when he heard of the Occupy Wall Street action to set up camp in Zucotti Park. He decided he could not remain silent but must express his solidarity with the movement against corporate corruption and economic disparity. Capt. Lewis came to NYC just beforethe park was raided. He joined the effort in uniform by standing with others at the park to voice their complaints against Wall Street greed. He shared how NYPD “white shirts” threatened that they would “get” him for what he was doing. Then, Capt. Lewis gained national attention when he wound up being arrested just like any other protester.

Then Capt. Lewis shared some unsettling news that he had just received. He was basically threatened by the Philadelphia police commissioner, and criticized by the police union. The threat actually included the status of his pension. Capt. Lewis shared that he recognized this was all an attempt at intimidation, that there was no claim based on any breach of law on his part, and declared that these attacks would only strengthen his resolve to stand up for his convictions.

What is revealing is that it is the police commissioner and police union that are out of order by attempting to undermine Capt. Lewis’ freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. They have no violated their oath to protect and defend the Constitution. The police state is overdrive, protecting the 1% although the members of law enforcement are adversely affected by that same 1%.

The presentation was followed by a screening of THRIVE – the documentary on the availability of free energy technology.

Epifaneo Collective Presents Great Musical Diversity

This week at Epifaneo we featured a performance by multi-talented Will Galison on jazz harmonica. There have been great blues harmonica players, but playing jazz on this instrument requires a different set of skills. Will’s artistry in this sophisticated genre is music to anyone’s ears. His repertoire covers the jazz classics. As most jazz musicians do, Will can transcend into any other popular style. We’re glad he found us on the day of the “nor’ easter” which brought him up from the Occupy Wall Street scene out of the snow and rain. You can hear more at www.willgalison.com.

We also heard from up and coming vocalist “Scratface” (Zoe Rosario), performing with a few of Epifaneo’s in-house talent, Yusuf & Tevin. Although her vocals remind one of both Annie Lenox and Nora Jones, she is developing into her own space which is filled with promise. We look forward to much more.

Epifaneo Collective is open as a venue for showcasing great music and art. Stay tuned as we ramp it up!

Oct. 26 / Teach-in – Strategic Organizing to Create Laws to Support Self-Governing Communities

– 11:30 am – 1:30 pm  on site at  OWS
–  2:00 pm  – 4:00 pm at the Epifaneo Collective

WITH
Ben Price, Director of Projects , Community Environment Legal Defense Fund, PA and
Shannon Biggs, Director of Community Rights Project at Global Exchange CA.

SUBJECT:
Strategic organizing to dismantle the body of law that perpetually subordinates people, communities and nature to wealthy corporate minorities, create self-governing, sovereign communities.

Shannon Biggs is Director, Community Rights project at Global Exchange CA.  Here is how she frames her work:  From gas drilling to toxic dumping to water bottling…who makes the rules where you live—corporations or residents? The Community Rights Program assists communities confronted by harmful corporate projects to assert their right to make important decisions that impact them by passing binding laws that place the rights of residents (and nature) above the claimed legal “rights” of corporations. At the heart of the Community Rights Program is the belief that our right to create the kind of place we want to live and reining in corporate exploitation of our communities is the next evolution of the civil rights revolution.

Ben Price is Project Director at the Community Environment Legal Defense Fund PA. CELDF — Ben leads organizing across Pennsylvania and the nation to pass rights-based ordinances that support community rights to self-govern over corporate intrusion.  Over 100 communities have adopted Legal Defense Fund-drafted laws which build community rights and dismantle the body of law that perpetually subordinates people, communities, and nature to wealthy corporate minorities.  As Projects Director he assists strategic organizing in all areas of the country, and travels as needed to support movement-building.
